Deciding Which Radiology Degree Programs Are Right for You

Radiology can definitely be said to be a highly rewarding career choice. Not only does it allow you to work in a fast-paced, exciting field that is all about helping and healing people, but it gives you a chance to work with some of today’s most amazing new technologies as well.

However deciding radiology is the right choice for your professional life and figuring out which radiology degree programs would be the most beneficial for you to pursue are two different things. Here’s a look at your options.

Radiology Certificates
Some people looking to go into radiology want to get working as quickly as possible. They often choose to go after a radiology certificate instead of a full-fledged degree right off the bat. However, it is important to note that often, credits that went toward a certificate often won’t count toward more advanced radiology degree programs.

Radiology Associates Degree
An associate’s degree is the route most commonly taken toward a radiology career, especially if you’re looking at working in radiologic technology in particular. However, unlike the certificate option, you’ll be able to build on your associate’s degree in radiology later on down the line should you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree or a master’s.

Radiology Bachelor’s Degree
If you want to work as a radiologic technologist, you really only need an associate’s degree in order to be eligible for most positions. However, those who actually have a bachelor’s degree instead will definitely impress potential employers and set themselves ahead of the competition in a big way. Also, a bachelor’s degree will probably be required should you decide you’re interested in pursuing positions like lead radiologic technologist.

Radiology Master’s Degree
Those who have their ultimate sights set on an advanced position in the radiology field, such as radiologic assisting, will definitely want to seriously consider going after their radiology master’s degree sooner or later. Should you become interested in becoming an actual radiologist, it’s important to note that you will need your actual M.D. in order to do so.
Since different positions in the radiology field require you to choose different radiology degree programs in order to achieve your goals, it’s important to plan ahead in order to avoid the need to backtrack. The sooner you get started on acquiring the right credits and educational accolades, the sooner you can get to work in one of the most exciting career paths in the world.
