What to Look for in Radiologic Technology Schools

If you’re seriously thinking about pursuing a career path in radiologic technology, then you should be congratulated on an excellent choice. Radiologic technology is one of the fastest growing and most secure career choices on the planet today and with good reason.

As significant advancements in health care technology continue to be made, we’re finding more and more people living longer than ever before. Populations of elderly are increasing. The world needs qualified health care personnel more desperately than ever and radiography is a huge part of today’s treatments, as well as the treatments of the future.
Plus, radiographic technology is a field you can go into and collect good money for with only an associate’s degree under your belt, so it’s no wonder so many people are interested in pursuing it. However, it’s important to get your education at the right radiologic technology schools. Here’s what to look for in order to ensure a smart choice.

Radiologic Technology Schools Should Be Accredited
When it comes to the professional radiology community at large, accreditation needs to come from a body known as JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology). Before deciding once and for all that you’d like to sign up for a particular program with a given school, check to make sure they’re JRCERT accredited first. This will ensure that any degree you earn – whether it’s a basic associate’s or a more advanced bachelor’s or master’s – will be useful and recognized no matter where you may decide to look for work after program completion.

Radiologic Technology Schools Should Be Extensive
Some radiologic technology schools fall under a description known as “limited scope”. Limited scope is exactly what it sounds like more or less. For instance, let’s say you’re ultimately looking to work in x-ray technology. If a given school’s x-ray program is limited scope, then you will only be learning some of what you may need to know in order to be eligible for the best job opportunities. This could make things hard when it comes time to actually get out there and start looking for jobs.
Do your homework before you sign up in regards to what a given program at a particular school will really prepare you for. If one school says that it can prepare you for a career as a radiologic technician, be sure that that’s actually the position you want to pursue. Otherwise, it’s best to keep looking until you find an organization that can meet your needs.
